‘Day Breaker’ is one of my favorite prints not only for its color, light, and beauty, but because of the story behind it. The day I took this image, I was with my team in Northern Norway where the winter sun never crested the horizon, even at midday. We raced against the fading polar light to secure images and video for a local campaign against oil drilling in Lofoten’s waters. The region is home to the world’s healthiest population of orcas, drawn to the fjords by the massive schools of herring that form the foundation of a thriving marine ecosystem. As we headed out to sea, this orca suddenly surged next to our boat in a playful challenge to race. In the end, the campaign succeeded in stopping the drilling and we returned home with hope for the future of the Arctic.
