Far too many of us get to know fish as food before we realize they are wild animals living in the sea. We live unaware of the complex lives they lead beneath the surface, wrought with dangers, triumphs, and entire dramas unfolding in the depths. Last year, I had the chance to photograph the annual grouper spawning under the full moon in French Polynesia’s Fakarava Atoll. It is incredible how the survival of a species comes down to just a few short minutes in June. Yet, the entire ritual supports the local ecosystem and countless other wildlife – including about 1,000 sharks constantly prowling the reefs.
