Population studies have found that healthy diets are associated with less facial wrinkles. An eating pattern heavy with meat and junk is associated with more wrinkles, whereas a fruit-rich diet is associated with fewer wrinkles. It may be the antioxidants in healthy foods decreasing the oxidative stress load, the anti-inflammatory benefits of plants, protection from sun damage, improved collagen production, or perhaps better DNA repair. The bottom line is that eating more healthfully may do more than just reduce wrinkling. If people start eating better to maintain a more youthful appearance, lives may be saved because they’d get all of the chronic disease benefits as a happy side effect! While diet is important, the single most important thing we can do for skin protection is wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen and use other sun protective measures.
