Black cumin is claimed to have medicinal benefits. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses of randomized controlled trials have found that daily black cumin consumption significantly improves cholesterol, triglycerides, blood pressure, and blood sugar control. Randomized controlled trials have also shown that about a quarter teaspoon of black cumin powder every day appears to cause weight loss within just a few months.

What exactly is black cumin? Also known as Nigella sativa or simply black seed, it isn’t related to the cumin many of us may be familiar with. Black cumin is commonly found in Indian and Middle Eastern dishes. It has a peppery flavor and can be added just like black pepper to savory dishes, like tofu scrambles, soups, or stir-fries.
