Today marks the day that Rekia Boyd was taken from us. In 2012, an off-duty police officer in Chicago shot Rekia in the back of the head with an unregistered gun after an altercation with her and her friends at Douglas Park. She was only 22 years old. In the years since, Rekia’s brother and family have spoken out against police brutality, advocating for justice for the many Black women whose lives were taken by law enforcement. Even more than a decade later, the fight continues. Our communities should not be at the mercy of law enforcement. Our neighbors, friends, and family should not be criminalized. Murders by the police should be prosecuted. We deserve a legal system that values Black lives. We will continue to honor Rekia and #SayHerName. Rekia Boyd should still be here. 🖤
