Color Of Change has always supported DEI policies, which ensure fair opportunity in areas where racial discrimination and prejudice have historically run rampant–such as hiring, education, and housing. But right-wing conservatives see these policies as a threat. Mounting pressure from anti-DEI activists in the past year has caused many major companies to roll back their DEI initiatives. Yet Costco, in response to a proposal from shareholders to evaluate the risks of continuing their DEI efforts, has pushed back. This response is a staunch rejection of right-wing misrepresentation of DEI’s goals and aims. DEI is not “reverse racism” or just “wokeness,” it is an essential program that helps ensure social, economic, and political access to people across identity groups. Regardless of anti-DEI rhetoric and pushback to come with the approaching presidential administration, COC will continue to support this important program.
