Today is National Gun Violence Awareness Day. Every day, more than 120 Americans are killed with guns, and guns remain the leading cause of death for children and teens in America. Gun violence can result in an array of clinical mental health concerns, including trauma & PTSD. The emotional impact of violence can also have a ripple effect across entire communities.
Though the conversation around gun violence in the U.S. is politicized and often fueled with misinformation, the research is clear: 95-97% of homicidal gun violence is carried out by people *without* mental illness. Hate is not a mental illness, and mental illness should not be a scapegoat for this devastating culture of gun violence in America.
