Part II In the cold black waters of Norway, mitty and paulnicklen were surrounded by the silent dance of orcas and a giant ball of herring. Suddenly, Mitty sensed a shift. By the sheer volume of water that was displaced, she knew something big was approaching. She glanced over at Paul and their guide. They were already scrambling to swim away. Humpback whales were rising fast from beneath the herring ball. Mitty kicked back as fast as she could. With a force that shook the water around her, the humpbacks erupted from the depths, engulfing the herring ball, and missing their group by mere feet. Once she caught her breath, Mitty looked down again. The herring ball had vanished and the orcas, deprived of their meal, were swimming away. Before this encounter, no one fully understood the relationship between the orcas and humpbacks in these waters.
