The New Zealand government just announced NZ$11.7 million in funding to expand open-net salmon farms, tossing in buzzwords like “sustainability” and the “blue economy.” But salmon farming is far from sustainable—their decision makes it clear that profit, not sustainability, is the true priority.
Other places, like British Columbia, are fighting to remove open-net farms after witnessing their devastating impacts on wild fish. These farms spread parasites, disease, and pollution, weakening wild fish populations and disrupting entire ecosystems. There are sustainable forms of aquaculture—like seaweed and shellfish farming—that genuinely support a blue economy. Open-net salmon farming is not it.
Join us in this urgent call for the New Zealand government to reevaluate this decision and protect their ocean’s future over short-term profits.
