In the icy fjords of Norway, where winter’s darkness is all-encompassing, mitty found herself on a zodiac skimming across the choppy black water.
As she adjusted her eyes to the dim light, towering dorsal fins sliced through the surface. Even from the boat, her instincts kicked in. “There’s no way I’m getting in the water,” she told herself. But before she had time to think, paulnicklen and their guide slipped overboard—and she had no choice but to follow.
The moment she entered the water, her fear faded as she turned her camera onto something extraordinary—an orca ballet, never before seen in such detail. In near perfect coordination, the orcas drove the massive school of herring into a tight ball. One by one, the whales took turns feeding while young calves mimicked their mothers, learning the art of herring-herding.
Suddenly, she felt a shift in the water. “What now?” Mitty thought.
Stay tuned for part two, next week!
