At birth, cubs weigh just over a pound and rely entirely on their mothers for survival. This is the most vulnerable time in a polar bear’s life—and with a rapidly warming Arctic, their survival is at risk. Scientists widely agree that polar bear populations are projected to decline in the coming decades as sea ice melts. Already, we’re seeing changes in their body size, condition, and behavior. But polar bears are really difficult to study, and a lot more research is needed in order to give them the best chance at survival.
