The high seas make up almost half of our blue planet—and they’re at risk. Without any legal framework for protection, they remain open to destructive industries (like deep-sea mining) which threaten marine biodiversity and accelerate climate change. The High Seas Treaty gives us the legal framework to protect these waters, but it won’t take effect until 60 countries ratify it. So far only 15 have. The longer we wait, the harder it will be to stop industries from exploiting our ocean, as companies rush to secure permits and licenses before protections can take effect.
