Deep-sea mining is being pushed as the newest frontier in resource extraction, driven by the rising demand for metals like cobalt and lithium—key materials in batteries for things like electric vehicles and phones. We’re led to believe this is the only answer to climate change and technological progress, but it isn’t. It’s a dirty way for the rich to get richer, ignoring more sustainable alternatives. Tearing up the seabed to extract small rocks, known as “polymetallic nodules,” will destroy ecosystems we barely understand. Just last July, a study revealed that these nodules may produce “dark oxygen”, potentially reshaping everything we know about carbon cycling on Earth. And that’s just one example. We’re teaming up with soalliance to support their campaign for a moratorium on deep-sea mining. We can’t afford an “act first, ask questions later” approach when so much remains unknown.
