Leading up to the moment, Mitty recalled, “I would be lying if I said I was not intimidated by the prospect of slipping into the frigid waters to photograph Antarctica’s iconic leopard seals.” But when the time came, she pulled on her mask and took the plunge. The moment she hit the water, a 9 ft leopard seal swooped in to check her out. Thankfully, the seal seemed more interested in her reflection in Mitty’s lens than Mitty herself—an ideal outcome when photographing Antarctica’s top predator! It takes serious courage to create stories like this, that capture people’s hearts and attention.
