We’re getting into the holiday spirit with one of the most mystical creatures of the North Pole—the narwhal! Okay, they don’t exactly live in the North Pole, but around the Canadian Arctic and Greenland. Narwhals are toothed whales, making them cousins of orcas, beluga whales, and dolphins. Although they’re classified as toothed whales, they don’t actually have any teeth—at least not in the way we imagine them. The narwhal’s iconic tusk is a single elongated tooth that can reach 3 metres long! These tusks have highly sensitive nerve endings so they aren’t used as weapons, but rather for social status. Narwhals are incredible divers, reaching depths of nearly 2km. They spend most of their lives under the sea ice, surfacing in cracks to breathe. Narwhals eat halibut, cod, squid, and shrimp. Because they don’t have teeth, they use suction to swallow their prey whole. Stay connected by signing up for our newsletter, link in bio. Get deeper insights on our work, the most pressing envi...
