This stunning footage comes from Baja California’s Sea of Cortez, a hub for cetacean migration and one of the most biodiverse marine ecosystems on Earth. Known as “The World’s Aquarium,” its extraordinary abundance of life is fueled by upwelling currents, which bring cool, nutrient-rich waters from the deep to enrich coastal ecosystems. Of all the inhabitants of the Sea of Cortez, blue whales are truly extraordinary. They’re the largest animals to have ever lived on Earth. And with their krill-exclusive diet, they’re essentially 200 tons of krill in whale form. Their calls, reaching 188 decibels, are louder than a jet engine—powerful enough to cause hearing loss if heard up close! Blue whales are endangered, and both they and the Sea of Cortez face threats from human activities.
