France holds the largest Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) in the world, and with this comes immense responsibility. But instead of leading the way in marine conservation, France is allowing destructive practices like bottom trawling within its Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). More than 90% of France’s MPAs are what we call “paper parks,” and offer no real protection. Bottom trawling destroys critical habitats, releases stored carbon, and threatens marine biodiversity. Allowing this devastation within so-called protected areas undermines the very idea of protection and exposes France’s claim of protecting 30% of their waters by 2030 as greenwashing.
