You may have seen some of our previous posts about the dangers of salmon farms on BC’s coast and their devastating impact on wild salmon. Unfortunately, these threats are not limited to BC—or even to wild salmon.
In Chile, two humpback whales were recently found dead near separate abandoned salmon farms, just one day apart. Even more concerning, both incidents occurred within marine reserves. One whale appeared to have been entangled in nets, while the other was found near a site reportedly storing dangerous chemicals that later vanished.
These incidents highlight two troubling realities: the “protection” of marine reserves is often an illusion, and open-net salmon farms, even when inactive, continue to harm marine life. How much more damage will we allow salmon farms to do before we prioritize getting them out of our oceans?
