Our co-founder, Paul Nicklen, spent over 100 hours underwater in the Galápagos, patiently waiting 100 feet below the surface. He was waiting, hoping, for something extraordinary—a chance to witness a school of hammerhead sharks. The Galápagos Marine Reserve is one of the few places on Earth where these sharks gather in large numbers. For over a minute, a river of hammerheads poured over him. Just as he thought the experience couldn’t get any better, something tapped his head and a flipper dropped into view. A turtle had landed on his head! This richness of life isn’t uncommon in protected areas like the Galápagos Marine Reserve, and it shows us what’s possible when the ocean is given a chance.
