Norway is pushing hard for deep-sea mining, and we have one last chance to stop them. Norway is fast-tracking the process to grant “exploitation” licenses for deep-sea mining in the Arctic by spring 2025—a strategic move to get a foothold before the High Seas Treaty is implemented. Given our limited knowledge of the deep sea, mining risks irreversible harm to marine life. The Nordic Council has called for a moratorium on deep-sea mining until we understand its impact, yet Norway is pressing ahead. This move undermines the High Seas Treaty, which Norway has signed, signaling a disregard for international commitments to protect our oceans. Our last chance to stop this is right now, during Norway’s budget negotiations this month. We need all hands on deck to put strong, international pressure on Norwegian leaders (tagged below) to prioritize Arctic conservation over exploitation.
