Content Warning: This post contains upsetting information and footage A couple weeks ago, this young humpback whale named “Sweet Girl” was fatally struck by a ship in French Polynesia. Authorized responders were on the scene, but it is extremely difficult to euthanize an animal this large underwater. Sweet Girl suffered for three hours, hiding under the responders’ boat like a calf would with its mother, before eventually drowning. Her story is just one of the estimated 20,000 whales killed by ships every year. Research shows that simple solutions—like enforcing speed limits and rerouting ships around key whale habitats—can dramatically reduce these preventable deaths. Today, we have an opportunity to make a difference in French Polynesia, where whales like Sweet Girl migrate through some of the busiest shipping lanes.
