Happy World Octopus Day! š
In celebration of one of the oceanās most intelligent and intriguing creatures, letās dive into some quick octopus facts:
1. The plural for octopus isnāt octopi, itās octopuses! The ā-iā ending for plurals is used for Latin-derived words, but octopus is Greek, so the plural is octopuses.
2. Octopuses are part of the phylum Mollusca, which makes them distantly related to animals like snails and clams. Their class, cephalopod, means āhead footā in Latin!
3. Octopuses evolved their camera-like eyes entirely separate from vertebrates, yet both developed nearly identical structures through a process called āconvergent evolution.ā
4. You might have heard octopuses have 8 tentacles, but they actually have zero! Scientifically speaking, their appendages are not tentacles, but armsāthereās a difference!
How many of these facts did you already know? Do you know an octopus fact that wasnāt listed? Letās hear them!
