Much like the loop phenomenon highlighted earlier this week, sharks also leave a lasting impact with their “releases” of nutrient-rich bounty. These oceanic gifts directly benefit the superheroes of our latest “A Sea of Hope” episode: corals!
Just as our blue planet needs healthy coral reef ecosystems, corals need sharks to thrive....the ultimate underwater buddy system!
Sharks bring vital marine nutrients from their deep dives into the ocean depths up to the shallower waters where the coral reefs reside. Corals rely on sharks to maintain the balance of fish populations, reduce disease spread by marine life, and protect against invasive species. In return, corals provide sharks a place to find a cozy shelter, a spa station to get spruced up by fish eagerly awaiting to clean the apex predator of parasites, and a built-in nursery for their newborn pups.
As a result, with a healthy population of sharks, coral reef...
