Do you often wonder the history behind the people who built and lived in Galveston’s historic homes? On Saturdays we feature homes of the island’s East End Historic District using historic newspapers to take a peek inside these old walls. Although it is an overcast day on the island, this home built soon after the Great Fire of 1885 is light and bright! Walter F. Stewart and his family lived in the home through the end of the 19th Century. It appears Walter had quite the storefront on Tremont labeled as “importer and dealer in firearms, ammunition, fishing tackle, bicycles and supplies.” Eventually, Captain Henry Giles Jones and his family moved in. Originally from Maine, Captain Jones spent many years going back and forth from the Gulf Coast to New England to bring ice to our Texas island city. He and Margaret lived in this home until they passed in 1932 and 1935. #EastEndSaturday 📸 roamgalveston
