Can we recreate the power of the sun to help solve the climate crisis? ☀️ TKS student Vivek Kommi gives us the TLDR on this recent scientific breakthrough. Fusion Energy is the reaction that powers our sun and it works by smashing two atoms together. This requires extreme pressure and extreme heat and trying to recreate these conditions is extremely challenging. But that didn’t stop a group of scientists at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California who recently achieved “fusion energy gain” (ie. more energy came out of the experiment than went into it) for the first time by firing 200 lasers directly at a tiny capsule of hydrogen, causing implosion where fusion reactions can take place. The best part? The energy released by fusing two atoms together releases no carbon dioxide (or radioactive waste), generating clean power without pumping greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere. Could this technology revolutionize energy production and solve the global climate crisis?...
