nèi ge (那个) precedes the n-word by thousands of years. as chinese people, i think we have a right to be able to speak our language unencumbered. as a black person, i know first hand how it feels to be called a slur used to completely eviscerate the humanity of it’s recipient.
unfortunately, in america, a country that was quite literally the blueprint for apartheid, we must face the unfortunate altercations that this misunderstanding may lead us into.
but the fight shouldn’t be against each other, it should be directed towards educating ourselves of the system that has placed us in this predicament.
the similarity to the slur is not Chinese people’s fault. the rage that may emerge upon hearing a perceived slur is not black people’s fault.
