Sharon McDougle was the first Black woman to work as a spacesuit technician, crew chief, and manager of the Space Shuttle Crew Escape Equipment Processing department. Spacesuit technicians help astronauts don and doff their suits for training events and missions. She suited up Mae Jemison for STS-47 (in which Jemison became the first Black woman in space) and led the first all-women team of spacesuit technicians for STS-78. Recently, a variety of artifacts from McDougle's work joined our collection, including this hat, award, and polo shirt. #SmithsonianWHM #WomensHistoryMonth #SpaceShuttle #NASA #WomenInSpace
