Senior Constable Kristian White, convicted of manslaughter for the 2023 death of Clare Nowland, has been spared jail time. On Friday, a New South Wales judge sentenced White to a two-year community corrections order and 425 hours of community service.
Nowland, a 95-year-old woman with dementia, died after White Tasered her inside a Cooma aged care facility. Weighing just 47.5kg and using a walking frame, she fell and struck her head after being Tasered. She died a week later in hospital.
The incident, captured on body camera, showed White saying “Nah, bugger it” before firing. The judge described the act as a “terrible mistake” but ruled that imprisonment would be “disproportionate.”
Nowland’s family described the sentence as a “slap on the wrist.”
