A film with less dialogue and more open spaces required us all to inhabit these characters through their own eyes and ears and hearts. I was the sole writer on this film, and even I was only to reach so far with dialogue and description. Words can reach the shoreline, but a pen and ink take you out into the ocean of a character's experiences, to ride the swells of real emotion. A single, skilled drawing can more effectively memorialize a moment than ten pages of a script. Before digital boarding, we were obligated to fewer drawings to sell a sequence. That meant the individual drawings hung on screen longer, and had to be more expressive. That's the era I learned in.
