Experiencing firsthand how orcas coordinate complex hunts beneath the surface of northern Norway was a childhood dream come true. While the conditions were not ideal, with rough seas and little light from the winter sun, the encounter became one of the greatest gifts I have ever received from nature. I watched as the pods corralled giant schools of herring into tightly wound bait balls at the surface before feasting. Every once in a while, a humpback would suddenly surge through the fish and gulp down the orcas’ efforts, leaving them to start again. Although my journey as a photographer has never been easy, experiences like this have made every challenge worthwhile.
