In 2024, Safia was diagnosed with autism. After years of not understanding why she felt the way she did, the young goalkeeper had clarity.
“I am feeling very relieved – like I have got answers now and clarity on what have been struggles for me. But I do feel very happy it’s there now and I can understand it and share my story.
“My life is a lot more positive now.
“The first person I told was my best friend, Jess [Simpson]. She has been amazing with it and helps me get out from behind that mask that I have been hiding behind. Leah [Galton] has also been reading a book on it.”
Saf is a smiley face every single day for the Reds and, with the visibility she is afforded by her career, she hopes to inspire others who are diagnosed with autism to embrace the way they are.
