MORE ABBY.
April is designated as Sikh Heritage Month, a time to celebrate the history, arts, culture and accomplishments of the Sikh community, including the arrival of Sikh settlers in the early 1900s.
Abbotsford’s iconic Gur Sikh Temple, located on our main street South Fraser Way, was completed back in 1911. Determined Sikh pioneers built this gurdwara with lumber carried from the Trethewey sawmill at Mill Lake. Blending traditional Sikh and western frontier designs, the temple includes a prayer hall and a kitchen. While it is a place of worship, it also brought community, which helped to foster a vibrant Sikh community.
Today, the temple is the oldest surviving gurdwara in North America and was designated a national historic site in 2002. In fact, it is the only gurdwara, outside of India and Pakistan, that has received this honour.
The gurdwara is open to the public daily from 9:00 am - 5:00 pm.
