THROWBACK THURSDAY: McCallum Journalism has a long, proud tradition that the current holders of the torch are proud to continue. In the spring of 1980, culminating a successful year for McCallum publications, Mrs. Lorene Denney received the Max Haddick Journalism Teacher of the Year Award for Texas at the Interscholastic League Press Conference held in Austin March 21 and 22. Even then, success was nothing new to McCallum publications, as Mr. Randy Stano’s newspapers and yearbooks were consistently among the best in the state in the 1970s. Mrs. Denney took over the program after Mr. Stano’s replacement resigned after the first six weeks of the 1978-79 school year. In 1980, the Shield and the Knight both earned ILPC Awards of Distinguished Merit and several McCallum juniors earned individual awards in the UIL district journalism meet.
