According to Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit Capt. Jack Kennedy, two Tuscaloosa Police officers were patrolling in the area of the 600 block of 23rd Avenue east around 6:30 p.m. in a marked patrol car; they were in the area after a report of a shooting the day before in which no one was struck or injured. While patrolling, officers saw a male wearing a mask who seemed to be walking fast between two houses after spotting the patrol vehicle. That person fired at least eight rounds in rapid succession at the officers before he ran off and leaped over several fences. The officers had not stopped or made any contact with the person before they were fired upon and did not return fire.
