Earlier this week, our co-founder mitty attended the SOS Ocean meeting in Paris. The ocean is in trouble. Scientists, advocates, and policymakers came together to prepare for the UN Ocean Conference in June—where decisions made will shape the future of our ocean and planet.
So much is going on right now, but deep-sea mining is at the center of the debate. Back in October 2023, French President emmanuelmacron called for a scientific review of its risks. This week at SOS Ocean, a diverse committee of 17 leading scientists released their findings: Mining the deep sea would cause irreversible harm, recommending that a 10–15 year pause on deep-sea mining is necessary to address ecological, legal, and governance concerns.
