Every year, humans produce 300 million tonnes of plastic waste, including 11 million tonnes that eventually wind up in the ocean. In fact, by 2050, there could be more plastic than fish in our seas. Most of our plastic never really disappears. Instead, it becomes smaller, with particles being swallowed by fish or farm animals and eventually consumed by humans in their food and tap water. To #BeatPlasticPollution, consumer pressure and individual actions —such as refusing plastic cutlery and straws, using refillable water bottles, and bringing your own coffee cups and shopping bags— are key. Yet, real change needs to come from companies, investors, policymakers and governments.
