Queens Of The Arena The Charrería is an equestrian competition that is unique to Mexico. The sport (similar to a rodeo) pays homage to the fighters of the Mexican revolution of 1910. Since the 1950s, the Charrería has included a women's event: the ‘Escaramuza'. The event consists of eight female riders wearing traditional clothing performing choreographed synchronised manoeuvres to music. This art (part of UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage) was born in rural Mexico in the 16th century but today the younger generation has integrated the sport into their way of life and are determined to keep the tradition alive. French photographer mathieu_richer_mamousse beautifully captures the grace of these young female riders in his photo series featured by photovogue.
