How does a stingray get an ultrasound? ⚕️🩺
Well, your Toronto Zoo recently completed routine health assessments on the freshwater stingrays in the Americas Pavilion 🌊
Through our comprehensive preventative medicine program which involves a One Well-being approach, each stingray underwent a complete physical examination. This involved sedating each ray by placing them in water that contained an anesthetic agent. The exam started with obtaining measurements of their body length and width. A thorough examination included looking at every inch of the ray's body to ensure there were no external abnormalities.
We also looked into their mouth to assess the dental plates which are essentially small tile-like teeth that allows them to crush/grind their diet items. Each ray had an endoscopic examination to visualize their gills.
