Drier skin has been found to be predictive of more persistent wrinkling, suggesting that regular use of skin moisturizers may be helpful. Moisturizers can hydrate dry skin and may reduce the appearance of fine lines by 15 to 20 percent, though they may not do anything to treat the underlying cause of wrinkles.
An eight-week, randomized, placebo-controlled, split-face study using niacinamide (at a 4 percent concentration) found a significant reduction in wrinkles around the eyes using both subjective and objective measures. Sixty-four percent of the eye wrinkles on the niacinamide-treated side of the face underwent moderate or marked improvement, compared to zero percent on the placebo side.
A split-face study involving the application of three drops of a 10 percent L-ascorbic acid (vitamin C) solution for three months found significant improvements over placebo in fine and coarse wrinkles, sallowness, and skin tone (firmness).
