Iced. Some of that March Madness upset magic must’ve drifted down the road from the Alamodome to Toyota Field. The stage was set for a Texas-style party on Sunday. Fans popped flares on the march to the stadium, old country music filled the air, and young supporters swung at piñatas hanging from the overpass above the tailgate. You really couldn’t have asked for a better scene in San Antonio. Spirits were high. Four straight wins to open their season, best start in club history, and the only undefeated and untied team in uslchampionship. That is until Phoenix Rising came in to burst the bubble. A team that had yet to win a game this season, snapped SAFC’s historic streak on CBS. A combined three goals in six minutes saw the visitors come out on top 2-1. Shock, disbelief, and silence ruled at the final whistle. What can you do? In one way or another, it’s the type of result that makes this sport so chaotically beautiful.
