Presidents weren’t always at each other’s throats…
In an era of heightened polarization, it’s easy to forget that there was once a time when political leaders, regardless of their party affiliation, could disagree and still treat each other with respect and kindness. Former presidents George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama remind us of a time when decency and civility weren’t just possible — they were expected.
In these moments, we see that political differences don’t have to breed hostility, and power doesn’t have to come at the expense of decency. These men may have fiercely disagreed on policies, but they always recognized each other’s humanity, and showed that mutual respect can outlast the most heated debates.
Civility and mutual respect shouldn’t belong to the past. They should be the standards we demand from our leaders today.
