Gifted to the
#UnitedNations by
#Rwanda, the Kwibuka Flame of Hope is displayed at UN Headquarters in New York.
The monument symbolizes resilience and courage following the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda, when more than 1 million people were systematically killed in less than three months.
“Kwibuka” means “to remember” in the Kinyarwanda language and it refers to the annual period of mourning coinciding with the genocide, which began on 7 April.
On Monday, we honour those who perished, and reflect on the suffering of those who survived.
It serves as a tragic reminder of the need to
#StandUp4HumanRights -- always.
