Unsung Heroes of the Movement: Rev. C.T. Vivian 🕊️✊🏽 While his name may not be as widely known, Rev. C.T. Vivian was a pillar of the Civil Rights Movement. A close advisor to Dr. King and a fierce advocate for nonviolent resistance, Vivian faced violence, jail, and injustice head-on—from leading Freedom Rides to confronting Jim Crow in Selma. In 1965, in front of the Dallas County Courthouse in Selma, Alabama, Rev. James Bevel and C.T. Vivian led efforts to register Black voters blocked by Sheriff Jim Clark. As part of the Selma Voting Rights Campaign, Vivian declared, “You cannot beat down justice.” Clark punched him in the face on live television—an attack that brought national attention to Selma and helped build momentum for the Selma to Montgomery marches and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. He helped found the Nashville Christian Leadership Conference, the National Anti-Klan Network, and the Center for Democratic Renewal—leaving a legacy rooted in courage, faith, and action. ...
