JUST IN: Minnesota took a step closer to legalizing recreational marijuana for adults after the DFL-controlled Senate passed the bill Friday.
The measure, which the House approved on Tuesday, needed support from every Democrat in the Senate to pass. Both the Senate and House bills will now be sent to a conference committee where their differences will be reconciled into a final version. The House and Senate would then hold final votes on the compromise bill.
Gov. Tim Walz has previously said he will sign the marijuana bill if it reaches his desk.
DFL Sen. Lindsey Port, who sponsored the bill, said possession and home-growing would become legal this summer, and misdemeanor marijuana convictions would be automatically expunged if the bill is signed by Walz.
