STEPPING OUT OF THEIR COMFORT ZONE: During Black History Month, the Knight Steppers went to schools around Austin and performed their routines, showcasing their skills to new audiences. The team went around elementary and middle schools. First-year member Maya Johnson was excited to be among her peers, performing for the first time at these schools.
“We were expressing ourselves during Black History Month, and we were showing [the students] the stepping team,” Johnson said. “From what I’ve seen so far, a lot of people really like watching the team perform.”
During school assemblies, the step team would take the stage and showcase their dances, in which they utilized their bodies as instruments, creating sounds and rhythms through choreographed movements.
“It was very fun, and I’m sure they also had a lot of fun because whenever I looked at their faces, they had wide eyes and big smiles,” Johnson said. “I feel like they all really enjoyed it though, and I had fun performing because...
