APES IN THE FOREST: Forty people from the AP Environmental Science classes had a chance this morning to take a field trip to the Festival Beach Food Forest, a community park where people can harvest produce, as well as volunteer to plant various greenery. Organized by APES student Clara Williams, a member of the Austin Climate Youth Council, the field trip was a chance for students to give back to their community, while earning volunteer hours and helping add to an urban garden. Williams discovered the food forest through the council she is on, and she partnered with them to bring students out and showcase the gardens to the community. “I wanted to host the field trip because I thought it would be a good way to involve our community at a really good organization,” she said. The students worked to remove weeds from a series of garden beds, planted sunflower seeds along the bed and topped it off with compost.
