Did you know that #Amherstburg, Essex County was one of Ontario's largest Black communities in the 1800s? šŸ“ Located across from the Detroit River, Black women, men, and children sought refuge in this small Canadian town when fleeing the United States, and it soon became a thriving society of professionals, farmers, and skilled tradespeople. August 1 marks the day that the Slavery Abolition Act, 1833 came into effect across the British Empire, including Canada. This #EmancipationDay, we celebrate the remarkable contributions of the Black community across the province, and reflect on the painful history of slavery and anti-Black racism in Ontario. #AmherstburgOntario šŸ“·: Images from archivesontario
