Today is the parinirvana anniversary of Jigme Lingpa (1729–1798), a celebrated tantric teacher. Known as Kunkhyen Jigme Lingpa, he is a great example of a Tibetan tantric master who combined study and practice in their life. This combination resulted in top-quality Buddhist teachings and texts based on ordinary and extraordinary sources and experiences.
Jigme Lingpa started his training at a young age and studied with many Tibetan masters. He carried out 2 major retreats, each lasting 3 years. During these solitary retreats, he received visions of great Buddhist masters and deities, and many profound tantric teachings were bestowed upon him. He revealed these teachings later and earned the status of Terton, a treasure revealer.
He taught many disciples and expanded his teaching lineage across the vast Himalayan region. He oversaw the publication of the “Nyingma Gyubum” (rnying ma rgyud 'bum)—a compilation of all Nyingma tantra—in 28 volumes. He left behind 9 volumes of his collecte...
