Yuri Kochiyama and her family were sent to a concentration camp in Arkansas for two years. This experience made her aware of government mistreatment and led her to join anti-war, Black liberation, and Asian-American movements. She later started a group called Asian Americans for Action. Kochiyama and her husband often hosted civil rights activists at their home for dinner and discussions.
