I picked him up early from school for a doctor’s appointment and almost cried when I saw him in this hat. (I didn’t see him this morning) I’ve always wanted my children to have a connection with my homeland of Puerto Rico, with my parents, my culture. For me the only way was by speaking Spanish. It’s been hard with Alex. He is the second child so he understands but doesn’t speak it. To my surprise that hasn’t stopped him from embracing his Puerto Rican half. From reading about the island’s history, studying the map, to embracing each visit and wearing the flag with pride, Alex se siente boricua. Huge lesson for me who thought for decades that if you didn’t speak Spanish you weren’t that Puertorriqueño or Latino. If you are raising a bicultural child, I commend all your efforts and understand that some will stick more than others. Who knows, today he surprised me with the hat, maybe when he is older he answers me in Spanish. 😂 #anabelaval #keepitreal #parenting #bilingual #bi...
